What can I do to reduce the number of fraudulent orders?

Fraudulent orders can be reduced by implementing a Card Identification Number (CID) check into your order form. It's very difficulto to completely eliminate the annoyance of fraudulent orders, but the CID check can help quite a bit.

A CID number can be found on all American Express, Visa, Mastercard, and Discover credit cards. It is a security number printed on all cards that is unreadable in credit card scanners.

Since the number is featured in a separate place from the actual credit card number, theoretically a fraud artist would need the card in his/her possession to place an order. Granted these numbers can be written down, but it does make it harder for a scam artist to use your card number online.

In order to implement a CID check:

  1. contact your payment processing provider and see if they support CID Checks. If they do, proceed to steps 2 and 3.
  2. add a CID box to your existing online payment form
  3. process the order and the CID on your end unit.
  4. CID Locations

    • Visa, Mastercard, and Discover CID Location
    • Most Other Cards

    • American Express CID
