My PC spam filter doesn't do much for me, why doesn't
AZC do such filtering on the server side?
First off, we would like to clear up a few things:
- Make sure your spam filter on your home computer is a strong one. A good one should be able to catch
more than 90% of your incoming spam. We have
suggested one in the FAQ "I got a lot of spam lately,
can you do something to help?". Please check it
out.
- Never assume that filtering done on the server side
"must be" more accurate in catching spam.
This is absolutely false. A piece of software is
a piece of software. Lousy software exist both
for servers and for PCs.
- Never assume that filtering done of the server side
is a "must have". This is again false.
AZC itself internally does spam filtering on
clients too. Unless you have a very high volume
of email (much higher say, than that of AZC's),
server side filtering doesn't help you much. More
below...
- spam filtering, regardless of whether it's done on
your PC or on a server, doesn't completely eliminate your
need to deal with spam! Why?
- spam filtering software, regardless how
well written and implemented, WILL
produce "false positives" -
legitimate messages classified as spam. It's
your "job" to scan filtered messages
from time to time to ensure among filtered out
messages, there are no such false positives.
Such scanning takes time!
- having spam filtered out to a different email
box surely beats having to wade through a lot
of spam mixed with legitimate messages. But the
aforementioned "scanning" takes just
about the same time regardless of whether the
filtering is done on your PC or on a server. The
implications are simple: if you don't scan
filtered messages often, or if you are not
careful, you WILL lose legitimate
messages!
In conclusion, please have no illusions about spam
filtering. Filters may make your life of dealing
with spam easier, but they are not your "complete
solution" to the problem. Please review the
FAQ "I got a
lot of spam lately, can you do something to
help?" too.
